About the event
In December 2022 web designer Lorie Smith argued to the supreme court that she should be able to turn down LGBTQ clients. Previously this would not have been allowed due to anti-discrimination laws which prohibit discrimination or refusing service to someone on the basis of their gender, race, sexuality, etc… but on June 30th, 2023 the supreme court ruled (6 to 3) that she would be allowed to do so on the basis of freedom of speech. It began when a gay couple supposedly wanted her to design their wedding website, she refused as gay marriage went against her personal beliefs. What’s the problem? The “gay” man cited in the case claims never to have been involved– or gay at all, being married to a woman for the last 15 years. In addition to a possibly corrupted case, this opens the door to further LGBTQ, gender, and sexuality discrimination. Was this case just trying to diminish LGBTQ rights or truly fight for personal freedoms?
