About the event
It seems like sanctions are not just a tool out of the tool box for the US– it’s used quite often. They’ve been minimally, if not completely ineffective in regime change: look towards Cuba, Iran, Iraq, and Venezuela, all countries that have been heavily sanctioned for decades. However, beyond difficult and often bloody regime changes, are sanctions a legitimate foreign policy tool? While it seems like the West, united with its numerous economically powerful partners, poses a huge threat to countries if sanctioned, many countries simply turn towards China or Russia. This imposes a dilemma– the West can’t stop trading with two economic strongholds just to enforce a secondary sanction, because the economic trade-off is huge. On the comparative, the less-used cooperative politics looks appealing: is collaboration and reliance a crucial step for more global peace? Or is it misguided trust that supports the livelihoods of brutal dictatorships?
